Words Spoken in Secret: Core Strength

I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Psalm 118:13-14 NIV

We hear a lot about the importance of core strength. Core strength refers to the muscles of the body running the length of the trunk and torso. More important as we grow older, core strength helps us maintain a solid foundation, transfer energy to other parts of the body, maintain good posture, and avoid falls caused by poor balance.
In building core strength, there are general exercises to develop these muscles. However, a physical therapist will prescribe additional exercises to work on weaker areas.

Sounds like what I need in my body, but also in my spirit. Core spiritual strength keeps me steady when the stressors of life press in. It keeps me from getting off balance in the face of new challenges. And it helps me stand tall instead of falling on my face.

Achieving core spiritual strength differs for each of us depending on our areas of strength and weakness. What is the Lord showing you? Are you weak in time studying the Bible, finding fellowship with other believers, or struggling with a sin that causes repeated stumbles? Are you too busy for God? Too busy to appreciate what He’s done for you and continues to do for you day by day? Are you allowing yourself the luxury of negativity and despair instead of standing on His promises of hope? He points out weak areas so you can work on rebuilding those muscles necessary to keep you standing strong. Like a physical therapist, his goal is to help you-not pointing out your faults to make you feel badly.

God’s prescription, like the physical therapist, is for an exercise regimen, not a one-time experience. Building core strength takes time and repetition. It’s not always easy but necessary to face the future with strength. The best part is that He’ll help you build up those muscles and show you how to keep them strong. It’s not impossible; it just requires those baby steps going forward one step at a time. You can do it!
